What is AIIMS?

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of prestigious colleges that provide best-in-class medical education to medical aspirants across the country. The headquarters is in Delhi and AIIMS has 7 different campuses spanning across India. The institute conducts its own medical entrance exam to seek admission to the MBBS program in AIIMS in all 7 campuses including the headquarters at Delhi. The national level entrance examination sees lakhs of applicants each year, trying their best to secure a seat in one of the AIIMS campuses to pursue their dream career in medicine.

What is NEET?

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a nationwide conducted entrance exam for medical aspirants to seek admission in government and private medical colleges in India. Earlier, states used to have their own medical entrance exam for admission into state-wise medical colleges. But those exams have been replaced by NEET, which is the common entrance exam aspirants have to give. Except for a handful of autonomous medical colleges like AIIMS and JIPMER, medical colleges across India select candidates based on the ranks scored in NEET.

NEET and AIIMS are medical entrance examinations that students would want to attempt to seek admission in MBBS and BDS programs. The similarities between the two stop there. From the syllabus to the examination pattern and selection procedure, NEET and AIIMS are different.

  1. Syllabus – Both NEET and AIIMS test the knowledge of students on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. But in the AIIMS entrance exam, along with PCB, students are also tested on their General Knowledge (GK) and aptitude.

  1. Exam Pattern – NEET exam tests students on their problem-solving skills in Physics and their logical understanding of concepts in Chemistry and Biology. In the AIIMS question paper, students will find assertion-based reasoning questions, which are not seen usually in NEET exams. The AIIMS paper consists of 60 questions each in the 3 sections – Physics, Chemistry, and Biology followed by 10 questions in GK and Reasoning. Whereas the NEET exam has 45 questions in Physics and Chemistry individually and 90 questions in Biology.

  1. Limited Seats – Though both are nationwide exams, the number of medical seats is limited in the AIIMS entrance test. Students who clear the AIIMS test have only options of 7 campuses in front of them, whereas, those students who attempt and clear NEET have a variety of medical colleges and locations to choose from. Though the selection depends on the rank the students’ scores, NEET offers around 70,000 medical seats every year, while AIIMS can offer only 700 seats in their 7 campuses.

  1. Exam Language – The AIIMS exam is conducted only in Hindi and English. NEET exam is conducted in 10 Indian languages – Odia, Bengali, Hindi, English, Assamese, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.

  1. Marking Scheme – The NEET exam allots 4 marks for each correct answer and deducts 1 mark for every incorrect answer. The AIIMS marking scheme has 1 mark for every correct answer and 1/3 mark is deducted for every wrong answer.

With all these differences, the preparation style for these exams will also differ. So, before you chart out your preparation strategy, know more about the exam pattern, question types, and important list of topics. This information will help you in coming up with a more effective study plan.
