The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, KVPY, is a government-launched scholarship program funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. The focus of this program is to provide support to students to take up research careers in the field of science. To receive this scholarship, interested students have to clear the KVPY examination and they will be awarded a KVPY scholarship amount.

The students who qualify for careers in research are eligible to apply for renowned institutes like IISC and IISER.

The KVPY examination has 2 phases. The first phase is an online aptitude exam which usually happens in the month of November, followed by an interview process in January-February for the students who clear the exam.

The KVPY SA exam happens in 2 parts. Part I has 60 questions with 15 each from Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Biology and the second part of the paper has 20 questions, 5 each from each section. The difference between the 2 papers is that Paper I has 1 mark questions and Paper-II has 2 mark questions.

The KVPY SX/SB exam also has 2 parts – the first part has 80 questions with 20 from each subject. The student has to attend only 60 questions i.e., attempt only 3 subjects. Paper-II has 40 questions, 10 from each subject and the candidate can attempt only 20 questions (2 subjects).

If you are a KVPY-aspirant looking to crack the KVPY exam and bag that scholarship, then you have reached the right place. In this article, we will provide details on how to prepare for the KVPY exam as well as what study materials you would require.

How to Prepare for KVPY Examination?

  1. Know the syllabus

The first step towards preparing for KVPY is to collect information about the exam pattern, syllabus, and reference books. This will give you an idea of what subjects to study, the division of marks for each subject, and the weightage given to important topics. This will also tell you the duration of the exam and the marking scheme which will help you develop a more precise study plan. The exam has questions from 4 subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics and you can refer to NCERT books for your first point of reference to start off.

  1. Have a clear-cut timetable

There are 4 subjects you will be tested on in a span of 3 hours. This is where time management is crucial. Allot time to all the 4 subjects accordingly and also, have buffer time spaced out in your timetable. This will give you time to revise and review what you have studied.

  1.  Take mock tests

Solving practice papers is a crucial part of your preparation. The more mock tests you attempt, the better your preparation will be. These tests will give you an idea of what type of questions and the difficulty level of questions you can expect in the exam. Analysing your performance in mock tests will help you figure out your weak areas in the subject and show you how your performance has improved over the course of your preparation.
