Shortcut Techniques of Multiplication in Vedic Mathematics

  • April 23,2021

Mathematics is a tricky subject – it is full of problems to be solved and there is no theory to substantiate the problems.  We have a bunch of formulae and concepts to follow and to solve the problems given in the question paper.

Many students get the jitters and run a mile away when there’s a maths exam.  However, maths is not as difficult as it may seem on the outset.  There is a whole section of maths, known as Vedic Mathematics which is a collection of tricks to solve maths problems in a quick and accurate manner.

Vedic maths allows you to solve maths problems immediately without the use of pen and power and using only your brain power.  This usually comes in handy when you are attempting competitive examinations with tight timelines.  It also helps you crack complex problems as you go to higher classes.

Most of the complex problems and sums in competitive exams includes multiplication of higher order of numbers and this is where we get stuck.  Using Vedic math tricks for multiplication is a smart move when you are in a hurry to solve multiplication problems.

3 Vedic Math Tricks for Easy Multiplication

In this article, we will show you 3 shortcut tricks to solve multiplication in Vedic maths.

  1. Multiplying any number by 5

The 5 times table is pretty easy to memorise.  However, when it comes to large numbers, it is not so easy to memorize.  This trick will help you solve 5 times multiplication in 2 easy steps.

Take the number you want to multiply by 5 and divide it by 2.  If the result of division is a whole number, then add a 0 at the end of the number.  If there is a reminder, ignore the reminder and add a 5 at the end.

Example 1: 1465 x 5 =

Step 1: 1465/2 = 732.5

Step 2: It is a fractional answer – so, ignore the number after the decimal point and add 5 at the end.

The answer is 1465 x 5 = 7325

Example 2: 8956/2 =

Step 1: 8956/2 = 4478

Step 2: It is a whole number – so, add a 0 at the end

The answer is 8956 x 5 = 44780

  1. Multiplying a 2-digit number by 11

Knowing this trick will help you solve the 11 times table quick as a flash.

Consider a 2-digit number, 45.  Now, imagine there is a space between the 2 digits.

Step 1: Put an imaginary space between 4 and 5 – 4_5

Step 2: Add the 2 digits and put the answer in the space between the digits –

The answer will be 45 x 11 = 495

  1. Multiplying any 2-digit number from 11 to 19

This 4-step trick will give you the answer faster than working it out in a calculator.

Step 1: Add the large number with the unit digit of the smaller number

Step 2: Multiply the result by 10

Step 3: Now, multiply the unit digits of both the numbers

Step 4: Add the results of Step 2 and Step 3

Example, take two numbers – 14 and 16.

Step 1: Of these, 14 is smaller.  So, add the unit digit of 14 – 4 with the larger number

  16+4=20

Step 2: Multiply the result by 10 – 20 x 10 = 200

Step 3: Multiply the unit digits of both numbers – 4 x 6 = 24

Step 4: Add the two numbers from Step 2 & 3 – 200+24

14 x 16 = 224

Questions in any competitive examination will involve lots of multiplication to be solved within a restrained time limit.  This is where such shortcuts will come in handy.  Such new concepts might seem difficult to remember in the beginning, but with problem-solving, you will get the hang of it.  Practicing them and following these tricks will help you solve complex maths problems in the shortest time possible and in an accurate fashion.
