Branch of Interest in new IITs vs Any branch in OLD IITS | what should I select? | Branch vs College

  • May 1,2021

IITs are the dream college for engineering aspirants. Aspirants pour their hearts out to prepare for JEE exam right from Class 11 and give the exam. Out of more than several lakh applicants, the top 20 percentile students qualify for the counseling process, but this is only the first step. The actual work and decision-making start only after you score your JEE Advanced marks. Every student faces this dilemma of which course to take in which IIT. There are old IITs that offer popular and regular courses and newly opened IITs that offer a higher course with potential. So, students struggle to make the trade-off between the campus and the course.

In this article, we will share our views on this dilemma, as well as, outline the points to be considered when you make this decision.

In reality, there are no ‘good’, ‘bad’, ‘higher’ or ‘lower’ courses in IITs or any college for that matter. It is simply a conception that has been created on the basis of previous candidates’ experiences and placement opportunities that they had. But it is a long-talked-about dilemma that many students are facing once they receive their JEE results.

The first factor to consider is your interest in the course. If you have set your mind to a particular course in a specific IIT, then the right option would be to go for it. Sometimes, it may happen that the course you are interested in is available in both new IITs and old IITs. In such cases, you will have to consider the past history of the course in each IIT, the number of students in each batch, and also compare the different placement opportunities that are offered in the old and new IITs. This will help you arrive at a decision on which IIT to choose.

If you are interested in a specific old IIT campus but are unsure of the course to take up there, then the IIT campus itself has different methods to help you try out different courses and then pick a stream that excites you.

In a case where you are completely unsure of which branch or not inclined towards any specific aspect in IITs, then experts would advise going for the old IITs, even if it means opting for less popular courses. This is because old IITs are established institutes and hold a huge brand value. They have proven methods of teaching and provide wide exposure which will help you develop your skills for a prospective career.

However, there will be determined and ambitious candidates who start their IIT preparation with a set goal in mind. They will possess that burning fire within themselves to secure a seat in the course of their choice. For those students, new IITs are the right option, because these new IITs are catching up to the old ones and will soon be at par with the old ones. The new IITs are missing the label and years of experience the old IITs have, but they are compensating for this in terms of the top-class laboratories and infrastructure.

We hope you have a better picture of the old vs. new IITs. These decisions can be daunting, so the right choice would be to sit down with your parents, jot down the pros and cons of the IITs you have in mind and the branch and IIT you have in mind. This introspection and discussion will help you clear your doubts and arrive at a decision.
