Essential Tips to Avoid Negative Marking in IIT-JEE

We can understand the pressure that students must feel while attempting the JEE exam and the thoughts that cross the mind.   JEE mains and advance are one of the most important exams that an engineering student attempts in their lifetime because this exam is an entry ticket to the premier institutes of India.  Preparing well for the exam is one thing and attempting the exam with complete confidence and concentration is another daunting task.  Students should not only prepare for the exam but should also prepare an exam day strategy that’ll help in attempting the exam perfectly.  The checking criterion of the exam includes negative marking for wrong answers that can change the complete scenario and makes the exam tougher.  Students should keep the negative marking in mind and attempt the exam wisely; here are some tips that can help aspirants in avoiding these mistakes that can lead to negative marking. 

1. Reading the questions carefully- the most basic thing that a student should keep in mind while attempting an exam is to read the question paper carefully.  Understanding the questions incorrect sense can help students in attempting them correctly, provided they know the solution. It has been observed in the past that students tend to misinterpret the question and end up losing marks, thereby take enough time and answer confidently. 

2. Overconfidence is risky- being overconfident is a risky thing.  Students should always trust their preparation and knowledge but must not be overconfident.  Reading, understanding, and then answering the questions is the norm. 

3. Time management- students should aim to manage their time well.  Diving time according to the sections can help in devoting time to all the sections.  Students tend to make silly mistakes under time pressure and thereby must assess that how much time should be devoted to different questions. 

4. Intelligent guesses- just in case there arises a situation where students have to venture a guess, then they should always make smart guesses and not play with the answers.  Guessing can prove to be taxing because one wrong guess can result in a deduction of marks.  Thereby, making use of elimination and then trying to guess the correct answer is a smart decision. 

5. Marking with concentration- it has been observed that students often mark the incorrect options and lose marks.  While marking the answer, die attention must be paid to the question being answered and the option that is selected. This is one of the silliest mistakes that students commit. 

6. Deep breathing- whenever students feel too pressurized they should take deep breaths and start attempting again.  Staying calm while attempting the exam can help in concentrating better and avoid silly mistakes.  Stress and anxiety always stand in the way of clearing the exam and must be handled well.
