Tips for Controlling Anger in Teenagers

Teenage kids are a nightmare for some parents. They come with a package of behavioural issues and handling them is like a herculean task for their parents. However, one of the most critical issues that a teenage kid experiences is anger. Anger management for teenagers has become a severe issue and parents often rely on schools to help them and educate them about the same. Thus, schools have now started to appoint counsellors, who are present in the schools and help with the anger management for school children. They not only help the children but also meet regularly with their parents and educate them about the same.  

 

Anger is not always bad, it is a common and healthy emotion if used wisely. But, if it is out of control, then it can be physically as well as mentally dangerous. So, for a teenage kid to understand the anger, and coping with it rightfully is extremely important. So, parents play a major role in helping their kids with it. So, we have planned a list of tips that will help a parent to help their kid and also if a teenage kid is reading this then they can use it to curb their anger issues. Let's get right into the list.

  1. Understand your anger-  Analyzing and understanding are very important steps to control anger. A lot of the times kids do not understand their trigger points or what makes them go out of control. So, analysing every little detail of the anger will actually help in managing it. Anger management for teenagers will surely give the utmost importance to this step. When the kid finally notices what angers him, then he can take some time out and understand what is the reason behind it to get so irritated by it. The next question to ask will be whether the reason is worth the anger? 

  2. Keep a check on your words-  Anger generally makes a kid speak anything without thinking much and sometimes the choice of words is not so appropriate. So, if something is bothering a kid so much, then after analysing it, kids should talk about it using the right set of words that will help the listener understand the problem and offer some help. If there is a facility in the schools for anger management for school children, then the kid can just talk to the responsible person about the emotions he is feeling at the moment and the help will be provided. Also, if a kid is explaining the problem with the right set of words it will be easier to understand it.

  3. Learn relaxation techniques- Many relaxation techniques offer quick to long-term effects. Parents could learn what helps their child the most and teach them the same. Also, if a parent willingly sits with a kid and practices the same, then there is a high possibility that the chosen relaxation technique will have more impact on a kid's behaviour.

  4. Do some physical exercises-  Physical exercises help to release stress and calm down the anger. Exercises release certain types of hormones also known as feel-good hormones, that help the brain relax and thus, controlling anger will become much easier. Regularly exercising will have great control over emotions. Parents can exercise daily with their kids and thus, make it a healthy habit. 

  5. Keep a diary-  Keeping a track of events will help a kid analyse better. Also, if a kid is taking anger management classes seriously, then keeping a diary or a journal will actually help him track his progress. He can also note down his trigger points and what helps him calm down.

  6. Ask for help- Sometimes, instead of helping their kids, parents often scold them or ground them for anger and while the kids get silent for the moment, it can have adverse long-term effects. So, instead, parents should be good listeners and a little more patient with the kids having anger issues. They should make their kids understand that asking for help is not a bad idea. Asking for help is a great thing and it helps to curb anger. With this, a kid will be confident enough to ask for help to cope up with anger and also confide in the parent who listens to them when it is needed.

Parents also should understand that anger can promote a hundred other behavioural issues in a teenage kid, thus patience is highly appreciated.
